Americans are Sleep-Deprived

Posted by Melissa Bamberg on

The National Sleep Foundation (NSF) recently released its annual “Sleep in America Poll,” detailing the amount of sleep Americans get each night, their bedtime habits, and the number of people taking sleep aids.

Only four in 10 respondents indicated that they got a good night’s sleep every night or almost every night. A separate NSF poll found that Americans sleep slightly less than seven hours per night on weekdays and 7.5 hours on weekends.

Researchers concluded that your bedtime ritual has a large impact on the amount of sleep people get per night. Staying up late on the computer, working, or watching television impacts your ability to fall asleep. Setting a bedtime for yourself is a great way to ensure you’re getting enough sleep each night, the researchers recommend.

Impact of Sleep Deprivation

Americans are getting an average 25 percent less sleep per night than they were a year ago. Lack of sleep can bring a number of serious consequences beyond simply being tired. Some of these include:

  • Memory loss
  • Weakened immune system
  • Weight gain
  • Brain damage
  • Depression
  • Elevated blood sugar levels leading to an increased risk of diabetes

Not getting enough sleep sends conflicting signals to your body. In addition to the above symptoms, failing to get enough rest can also increase your risk of cancer, heart disease, and stroke. It can also accelerate aging, raise your blood pressure, and hasten tumor growth.

In fact, one night of only getting four to six hours sleep can decrease your ability to think clearly the next day. Lack of sleep can cause changes in brain activity similar to psychiatric disorders.
